Privacy, cookies & accessibility.
This page sets out how Knight Designs Ltd ("Knight Designs", "we", "us", "our") collects and uses information when you visit kdtfc.com, contact us, or engage us as a consultant. We are committed to keeping the amount of personal data we hold to the minimum needed to do good work and to comply with the law.
1 Who we are & how to contact us
The data controller is Knight Designs Ltd, a limited company registered in England and Wales, based in Weybridge, Surrey.
For any privacy enquiry — to access, correct, delete or object to our use of your data, or to make a complaint — please email hello@kdtfc.com or call 01932 558406.
2 What data we collect
We only collect data we need to deliver our work or run the website. In practice that means:
| Source | Data |
|---|---|
| Enquiry form / email / phone | Your name, email address, phone number, company, and the project details you choose to share. |
| Project engagement | Drawings, specifications, correspondence, invoicing details and any other documents you send us in the course of a job. |
| Website analytics | Anonymous, aggregated information about how the site is used (pages viewed, country, device class). We do not collect IP addresses, fingerprint visitors, or use third-party advertising trackers. |
| Interactive tools | Inputs you type into our calculators (postcodes, panel build-ups, joist spans etc.) are processed in your browser only and are not transmitted to us. The Frame Builder game stores your name, optional company and score on the public leaderboard if you choose to submit them. |
We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under the age of 18.
3 How and why we use your data
The lawful bases on which we process personal data are:
- Performance of a contract — to scope and deliver work you've engaged us for.
- Legitimate interests — to respond to enquiries, run the website, prevent fraud, and keep records of work delivered.
- Legal obligation — to keep accounting and tax records as required by HMRC, and to retain documents for the period required by professional indemnity insurance.
- Consent — for any optional analytics cookies or future newsletter subscriptions you actively opt into.
We do not use your data for automated decision-making or profiling, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.
4 Who we share data with
We share personal data only with the small set of providers we need to run the business:
- Our email and document hosting provider (Microsoft 365), for the secure storage of correspondence and project files.
- Our accountants, for invoice and tax records.
- Our website host and the privacy-friendly analytics provider that powers the visit numbers we see.
- Statutory bodies such as HMRC, where we are legally required to share information.
Each provider is bound by a written data processing agreement that requires them to handle data only on our instructions and to keep it secure. We do not transfer personal data outside the UK or EEA where practicable; where any provider stores data overseas, transfers are covered by UK-approved safeguards (e.g. the UK International Data Transfer Addendum).
5 How long we keep data
- Enquiries that don't lead to a contract: deleted within 12 months.
- Project files for active clients: kept for the duration of the engagement.
- Project files after completion: kept for 12 years to align with the long-stop limitation period for construction contracts and the requirements of our professional indemnity insurer.
- Accounting records: 6 years from the end of the tax year, as required by HMRC.
- Website analytics: aggregated only, retained for 24 months.
6 Your rights under UK GDPR
You have the following rights in relation to the personal data we hold about you:
- Access — request a copy of your data.
- Rectification — ask us to correct anything inaccurate.
- Erasure — ask us to delete your data, where we no longer need it.
- Restriction — ask us to pause processing while a question is resolved.
- Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable form.
- Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests.
- Withdraw consent — at any time, where processing is based on consent.
To exercise any of these rights email hello@kdtfc.com. We will respond within one calendar month. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or by phone on 0303 123 1113.
7 Cookies
A cookie is a small text file a website stores on your device. We use as few as possible, and we never use third-party advertising or social-media tracking cookies.
| Cookie / store | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Remembering whether you've accepted this notice; basic security tokens. | 12 months |
| Analytics (optional) | Anonymous, aggregated visit counts via a privacy-friendly provider. No personal identifiers are stored. | 24 months |
| Tool state | Our interactive tools (Panel Explorer, Joist Calculator, Frame Builder etc.) store your inputs and game progress in your browser's local storage. This data never leaves your device. | Until you clear it |
You can disable or delete cookies at any time via your browser settings. Disabling strictly-necessary cookies may stop parts of the site from working as expected.
8 Google Analytics 4
This website uses Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID
G-CKQMZFV3G6) to understand which pages, tools, and content
are useful to visitors. We do not use it for advertising, retargeting,
or any commercial profiling.
Google Analytics is loaded only after you click Accept on the cookie banner shown on your first visit. If you click Decline, no analytics cookies are set and no data is sent to Google. Your decision is stored in your browser's local storage so you are not asked again.
If you accept analytics, the following information is sent to Google Analytics:
- The pages and tools you visit on
kdtfc.com - How long you stay on each page
- Approximate location (country level only — your IP is anonymised)
- Browser type, operating system, screen size
- The website that referred you here (e.g. Google, LinkedIn)
No personally identifying information is collected. Knight Designs Ltd does not have access to your raw IP address, and we do not link analytics data to individual people.
To change your decision later: clear the
kd_analytics_consent item from your browser's local storage
and reload the page — the banner will appear again. You can also
block analytics entirely with a privacy extension such as
uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger.
9 Accessibility
Knight Designs is committed to building a website that is usable by as many people as possible. We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance, which means:
- Sufficient colour contrast for text and meaningful UI elements.
- Logical heading structure and keyboard navigation throughout.
